This study aims to reassess the distinctiveness and competitiveness of the Jeonju Daesaseup Festival, a traditional Korean music competition, and explore the utility of its various contents. To achieve this, the research analyzes the Daesaseup Festival evaluation sheets and observations of the competition and performance venues. The results of the study are as follows: Firstly, it is necessary to introduce differentiated competition categories and performances, as well as seminars for storytelling, folk music, dance, archery, and poetry, which are integral parts of the Daesaseup Festival. Secondly, historical sites such as Unhyeongung Palace, Jeolla Gamyeong, and Hanok Village can be transformed into tourist and cultural zones by integrating them with the competition and performances. Thirdly, the system of citizen judges should be adjusted to reflect a fair balance of gender and region. Reevaluation and careful management of the selection and operation of judges are necessary to ensure the fairness of the competition, and expansion of meticulous post-appointment management programs is also required. This study places significance on the historical aspect of the Jeonju Daesaseup Festival and its distinctiveness compared to other traditional art competitions.

A Study on the Characteristics of Korean Ballet in Juri’s Blue Dopo +
주리의 「푸른 道袍(도포)」에 나타난 한국적 발레의 특성 연구+
DOI:https://doi.org/10.26861/sddh.2023.71.21Asian Dance Journal
Vol.71
pp.21-33
The purpose of this study is to explore the common Korean characteristics in the works of choreographers who were active in the same era as choreographer Juri, of “Blue Dopo” This paper is a literature study, and the results are as follows. First, from 1955 to 1970 the influence of the Korean War and the military regime, encouraged a search for Korean culture, promoting choregraphers to produce work related to Korea. In addition, since the National Dance Company was the only “national” dance organization, it is believed that choreographers internalized the cultural reforms of the government and projected Korean characteristics into their works. Second, the core theme of “Blue Dopo”which was created by Juri adapting the Spanish folk tale “Triangle Hat,” is based on orean folktales, poems, folk paintings, and legends. Therefore the costumes combine hanbok and ballet tights, the music is Korean and Western, and both Korean dance and Western movement is combined. It is meaningful in modern art history to re-examine Juri’s addition of Korean ethnic characteristics to Western themes as she was the iinfluential first female choreographer and founding member of the National Dance Company.

This study aims to analyze the life and aesthetic philosophy of Zhao Dexian, a pioneer and innovator Korean-Chinese dance theory. Zhao Dexian conducted research on the expressive techniques of dancers based on physiology and psychology, concurrently developing educational methods that combine theory and practice. This not only contributed to the development of Korean-Chinese traditional dance's stage expression but also played a significant role in an educational context. Building upon existing research, this study collects and organizes materials such as Zhao Dexian's writings, research papers, and critiques. In addition, it conducts in-depth interviews with Zhao Dexian's children, disciples, and relevant individuals to supplement any gaps in existing literature and to delve into the details of Zhao Dexian's growth and artistic activities while analyzing his aesthetic philosophy.

It explores how to harmonize emotional understanding and expression from both physiological and perspectives. The fundamental practice of this expression emphasizes dance training based on de analysis of humans through the "Si Xiang Fang" constitutional characteristics. In summary, this study highlights Zhao Dexian's contributions to the field of Korean-Chinese dance. Analysis of Jeong Jaeman’s Seungmu Yeombulgwajang through Greimas Semiotic
그레마스 기호학을 통해 본 정재만류 「승무」 염불 과장 분석
DOI:https://doi.org/10.26861/sddh.2023.69.53Asian Dance Journal
Vol.69
pp.53-72
This study is to analyze the movements of Yeombulgwajang, a section in Seungmu, a Korean traditional dance, from a perspective of Greimas’ semiotics. For the analysis of the study, the movement principles of “contraction and expression” and “tying and untying,” which were derived from the philosophies of Yin-Yang and Reincarnation embedded in Seungmu, were discussed through the idea of Greimas’s semiotic square. The relationships between contraction and expression and between tying and untying are deemed to be confrontational; the relationships between expression and untying and between contraction and tying are regarded as hypothetical; the relationships between tying and expression and between contraction and untying are seemed to be contradictory. The meanings of the dance may be formed and interpreted diversely based on the various combinations of these elements. The study contributes to demonstrating a new way of interpreting inherent meanings in Seungmu.

DOI:https://doi.org/10.26861/sddh.2023.69.101Asian Dance Journal
Vol.69
pp.101-119
The purpose of this study is to provide basic data that can serve as a guideline for understanding and interpreting the current state of Korean street dance by examining the inflow and development of Locking dance in Korea.
As research methods, interviews with three Locking experts were conducted and each interviewee’s responses were thematically categorized for the analysis of the study. As a result, Locking dance was introduced to Korean people firstly through video materials such as movies, broadcasts, and dance videos from abroad, and later by inviting well-known dancers from different countries to Korean dance competitions as judges. The introduction to Locking dance in Korean society motivated some Korean dancers to invite, various Locking dancers from across the world to Korea for dance workshops, which gave those who learned Locking dance only by watching videos the opportunity to experience the “original” Locking style. Since then, Locking dance in Korea has been more developed through the steady exchanges between Korea dancers and dancers from other countries. Currently, the number of Locking classes, workshops, and events in Korea has drastically increased.

한국춤을 활용한 무용동작치료 프로그램 개발 사례연구 : ‘코로나블루 해소를 위한 소상공CEO 대상 예술치유 Dance Therapy 케어사업’을 중심으로
DOI:https://doi.org/10.26861/sddh.2022.67.3Asian Dance Journal
Vol.67
pp.3-16
Through a case analysis of small business CEOs who have accumulated social stress as a result of the pandemic of COVID-19 and participated in a dance movement therapy program, this study analyzes and reconstructs Korean dance movements in order to develop a dance movement therapy program and presents its effects. This program incorporates meditation and breathing exercises based on Oriental philosophy. In particular, the study examined the development process and results of the program in order to expand its scope and apply it to stress, menopausal disorders, depression, and anxiety that are common among the general population.
Firstly, we found that gender neutralizing the feminine dance movements would make male participants more comfortable participating in the program. In addition, the dance movement treatment program using Korean dance movements was found to be an effective alternative complementary therapy for relaxing muscles and solving physical and psychological issues. Moreover, the Korean dance-based movement therapy program, which employs movements and sensibilities that are best suited to Koreans, can further improve the health and well-being of Koreans.
