pp.151-175
This is a research of Choi, Seung Hee dance, tour of USA, Europe, and Latin America. The tour of USA research covers the first USA performance initiated in San Francisco 1938 and the second one in 1939 which had purpose of avoiding the European War. The tour of Europe research covers from January 1939 in Paris right after the first tour of USA to the performance in Hague, Netherlands. The tour of Latin American research covers from the performance in Brazil in 1940 to the performance in Mexico after the second tour of USA to avoid the Second World War. The activities in the Communist bloc in Europe after Choi, Seung Hee's defection to North Korea have been excepted from the tour of Europe research. According to Professor Jeong, Byung Ho, Choi, Seung Hee created more than 310 works throughout her life. And it is shown in her own records of conversation that she had over 600 dance work performances during the world tour. Also, Professor Kim, Ho Yeon says that there are more than 600 news articles in The Chosun Daily News, Dong-A Daily News, Maeil Shinbo during the period of Japanese colonial rule. Currently, over 100 studies of Choi, Seung Hee can be found as preceding results. Among these works, performances, recordings, and researches, lots of errors appear when translating expressions of the countries where the performance took place to our expression and when interpreting those translated materials as primary source and analyzing with our method which causes so much confusion to the research when quoting them as well. The motive of this research is to minimize those confusions. Along the process, by translating primary sources from around the world, the unification of expressions in our terminology which Choi, Seung Hee originally used was conducted as well. This research may have some omitted areas since only confirmed information in primary sources was researched. Choi, Seung Hee presented steadily during the world tour and the materials for the creation were about Korea and legends of Japan. She stated in her performance fliers that she is 'Korean Dancer' and also put her Japanese name 'Sai Shoki'. This can be understood as reflection of difficulty of the era. The fliers contain the title, music, and, in most of the printouts, the warning for the copyrights. This can be the pride of her creation and the result of an artist's rights practice. As a result, proposing the pamphlets and evaluation data of each performances of USA tour and proposing the actual repertory and contents of performances by discovering Europe tour pamphlets (Paris and Germany) are considered to be meaningful works in the history of Choi, Seung Hee research.

문화예술회관의 운영실태에 관한 연구 : 2011-2016년 공연장 무용분야의 공연현황
DOI:10.26861/sddh.2019.55.111Asian Dance Journal
Vol.55
pp.111-137
By 1979, 95 culture and arts centers had been established, and there was an increase in the number of these centers every year from then on. In 2016, there were 229 culture and arts centers nationwide. The culture and arts centers established with the support of the government, needed the management of operation to suit local characteristics and environment with the lapse of time. To examine the operating state of dance performances of culture and arts centers, this study dealt with the performance record of the field of dance in performance halls from 2011 to 2016. Region, operator, and year were selected as demographic variables to make a comparative analysis of the trend in the changes of the variables. SPSS 21.0 was used to perform computational processing. The findings of the study were as follows: To the performance record of the field of dance in the performance halls, the total yearly number of dance performance cases was a mean of 2.6. and the total yearly number of dance performance days was a mean of 3.3. and the total annual frequency of dance performances was a mean of 3.9. Concerning the rate of paying audience in the area of dance, it stood at a mean of 15.2 percent, and was highest in Seoul. As the results, the number of dance performance days and the frequency of dance performances were low relatively to the number of dance performance cases compared to those of other genres. It implies that dance performances are given just on a temporary basis. Performance facilities that are tailored to the specificity of the genre of dance are necessary, and careful performance planning and assistance from the government are both required to ensure the continuity of dance performances.

Dual Power Mechanism and Body Politics : Focusing on the Case Study of North Korean Restaurants in Thailand
이중적 권력기제, 몸 정치의 발생 : 태국 북한식당 공연 사례연구를 중심으로
DOI:10.26861/sddh.2019.55.353Asian Dance Journal
Vol.55
pp.353-371
This paper focuses on North Korean restaurants as a medium of culture and tourism. Prior to the analytical discussion, the researcher first summarizes the concept of 'Munyae', which North Korea uses instead of culture, in order to understand the basic historical background of North Korean art policy. The researcher understands dance and art in North Korea as a tool to express the representative ideology of the revolution, as well as the performances, which operate inside the North Korean restaurants, serve as an important means to secure government funds for North Korean authorities. Based on the understanding of the North Korean art background, this paper examines the dual suppression mechanisms presented by the North Korean authorities, and discusses the effects of body politics on restaurant performers. According to the results of this study, the North Korea interprets their restaurant in Thailand as a transformative device to hide the function of the restaurant, which is used as a medium of political support for the communist country while placing it in the tourism industry category. In addition, the North Korea suppresses the activities of female employees, who are the actual operators and performers, in the overseas North Korean restaurants, while allowing performances coming from other countries. This dual power mechanism manipulates the female performers' bodies that can flexibly cope with other cultures that have been excluded from them, and at the same time expects their bodies tamed with socialist ideology.

Korean Dance and Non-textual Mass Media : Focusing on Contemporary Sound Recordings and Films, 1930-1960
근대 비문자 대중매체와 한국무용 : 1930-1960년대 유성기음반과 영화를 중심으로
DOI:10.26861/sddh.2020.58.129Asian Dance Journal
Vol.58
pp.129-170
This study focuses on the sociocultural and artistical interrelations between the "Korean Dance" and two of the most popular non-textual forms of mass media - commercial sound recordings (gramophone records) and films (feature films, newsreels, documentaries) - between the 1930s and 1960s. First, this study focuses on how gramophone records were employed through the Korean dance recitals during this period, as well as on what type of music was used in these recitals. Second, this paper examines the films documenting "Korean Dance" shot and produced during the time period in question, and discusses how these films were produced and how it has impacted establishing the "Korean Dance" through its mass distribution. By doing so, this paper attempts to provide a preliminary suggestion on how the "Korean Dance" has made its transitions over time, as well as an opportunity to historically understand the actual manifestation of "Korean dance" during its earlier days of a modern form of performing arts. It can be strongly argued that a strong sense of a historical parallel is revealed between the historic development of the Korean Dance in the early 20th century Korea and the development of the notion of Korean national culture, as both came into their modern manifestation through a series of constant interactions between Korean premodern cultures and the modern foreign cultures.

Dance Exhibition as Dance Archival Theory into Practice : Focusing on Judson Dance Theater : The Work Is Never Done by MoMA and Known Future by SeMA
춤 아카이브 이론의 실천으로서 춤 전시 : 뉴욕현대미술관의 과 서울시립미술관의 <안은미래>를 중심으로
DOI:10.26861/sddh.2020.59.147 Asian Dance Journal
Vol.59
pp.147-173
This study aims to examine dance exhibitions as a way of putting the dance archival theory into practice. For this, I explore performance theories which are relevant to a dance archive and look into two dance exhibitions, Judson Dance Theater: The Work Is Never Done by MoMA and Known Future by SeMA, which reflect the new performance archival theories. These exhibitions have three features. First, the present is one of vital matters in the exhibition. Second, tangible and intangible archive are acceptable. Third, visitor’s action is a part of exhibition. These features show a dance exhibition can be a way of putting the dance archival theory into practice. In addition, these two exhibitions show that a dance exhibition is an effective way to hand down a valuable dance to next generation, because less time and space constraints than a performance can make more people have diverse experience about dance. I suggest that a dance exhibition is a good way of putting dance archival theory into practice.

Exploring Features of Hooded Crane Dance Performed in Nantes and Suncheon
생태환경을 주제로 다룬 흑두루미춤 퍼포먼스의 특징 탐구: 낭트-순천 공연 중심으로
DOI:https://doi.org/10.26861/sddh.2021.61.3Asian Dance Journal
Vol.61
pp.3-26
This study explores a case of hooded crane dance performance that deals with the ecological environmental characteristics. In addition to choreographing movements and gestures, the subject of hooded crane performance was featured with theatrical dialogues. The data collection included choreography notes, photos, videos, memos, dialogues, and performance pamphlets collected twice in Nantes and Suncheon city between May and August 2019. The qualitative analysis of the data were presented in the following ways.
First, by reinterpreting the story of the wounded hooded crane (Doori) found in Suncheon the performance expressed the ecological life and adversity of the hooded crane from the opposing viewpoints between the ecological environment and humans. Second, the reactions of spectators suggested that the hooded crane dancing performance turned out to make them feel more interested in nature and ecology. Third, due to the real story of Doori, the performance played a role in reminding the meaning of the performance (i.e., ecological sensibility) while the locals appreciated the story in a friendly way. This study indicated the parts to be supplemented in future performances and expandability by attempting performances in the ecological environment of Suncheon Bay (tidal flats, etc.).

A Study on the Choi Seung-hee’s National Dance Studio’s Concert Tour of the USSR in the 1956-57 and the Glocality of the Dance Works
1956-57년 국립 최승희 무용연구소의 소련 순회공연과 공연작품들의 글로컬리티 연구
DOI:https://doi.org/10.26861/sddh.2021.60.213Asian Dance Journal
Vol.60
pp.213-242
The purpose of this study can be divided into two. The first is to clarify the detailed schedule of the concert tour of the USSR, which was the last schedule of the Choi Seung-hee’s National Dance Studio, dispatched to the Eastern Europe tour in September 1956. This clarification includes an identification of the purpose, signification of this concert tour and the dance works. The second is to analyze the phenomenon of Choi Seung-hee’s glocality in her dance works based on the trends of her creation in the 1950s and the Soviet audiences’ reception of her works.
The Choi Seung-hee’s National Dance Studio held a concert tour of the Soviet Union for 44 days from November 30, 1956 to January 12, 1957. In this tour, the North Korean government had a political purpose to advocate North Korea's position among socialist countries and to strengthen the solidarity among them.
After Choi Seung-hee’s return to North Korea, in the form of her works she used the stagecraft of Soviet ballet for her choreographies of North Korean dance. And In the content and subject of her works, she pioneered the North Korean dance drama “North Korean Ballet”, which dealt with socialist patriotism and proletarian internationalism following socialist realism. In her other dance works, she portrayed the North Koreans’ wise, optimistic, and diligent lives and showed the model of North Korean socialists. Although foreign audiences’ reception was different, her artistry was recognized in Eastern Europe, including the USSR, and caused a great repercussion.

A Study on the Type of Site-Specific Dance Performance: Focusing on the Concept of Site of Post-Modern Dance
‘장소특정적 무용공연(Site-Specific Dance Performance)’의 유형연구: 포스트모던댄스의 장소 개념을 중심으로
DOI:https://doi.org/10.26861/sddh.2021.60.269Asian Dance Journal
Vol.60
pp.269-288
The purpose of this study is to classify the types of site-specific dance performance based on the characteristics of the site. To analyze the types, I examine articles, interviews, reviews, and internet sources about site-specific dance performance. In conclusion, the general site type is not just the dismantling of the boundary between everyday life and the arts but has the characteristic of a place that provides an opportunity to remind us of our ordinary life through the connection of the subject of work from the characteristics of the everyday venue. The site of specific meanings type is a museum with its own cultural and historical meaning, or the theme of the work is connected from the characteristics of a place where free access by the general public is not possible, and through this, an opportunity to create partnerships with local communities and institutions. The episodic site type is that the subject of the work is connected from the discarded and useless place, and through this, it provides an opportunity to reflect on the historical meaning of the past and concerns about the issues currently occurring at the performance venue. This type has the characteristics of a place that presents the possibility of regenerating the place again.
