This study seeks to compare expression media between Kim Baek-bong’s Korean fan dance, a traditional dance designated as an intangible cultural asset of Korea and Kagyadifu (かぎやで風), a fan dance of Okinawa in Japan. The study examines hand motions of the two traditional dances. The author used an index of KAMAKURA as an external analytical method, while focusing on interviews and oral records to understand inherent characteristics. The ethnic identities of the expression media were identified as follows. First, fan functioned commonly by physical awareness and recognition of the body. The fans of the two countries did not directly express objects such as letters, but tried to describe the shape of the entire object as an extended part of the body. Second, the fans of Korea and Japan were differentiated as abstract technique in the process where sensual wave was reflected in the body. Ryukyu dance did not express the lyrics in a graphical or realistic way as in the case of sign language. The expression of fans was not verbal. Fans made a symbolic display of yearning that the region - the island - had toward outside world. In Korea, more than 30% of group dance figuratively reveals intention of original authors or nature. This is an indication that Korea's new art dance was affected by modern dance of the modern times. Third, fans had multidimensional contexts in showing internal feelings. Korean dance depicts nature or intention of authors, and express inner feelings through various rhythms. Ryukyu dance expresses relations between a fan and a dancer abstractly by containing a joyful feeling of the performer, rather than venting the feelings. The comparison of intangible cultural properties of both countries could reveal that they harnessed the same expression media but showed difference in their unique national emotion.

A Study on mind-heart and Acknowledgement of Traditional Korean Dance Based on Wang Yangmyung's Theory of Psychology ×

The purpose of this article is to explain the characteristics of mind-heart and acknowledgement, emphasized in the practice of traditional korea dance, based on the theory of Wang Yangmyung's psychology. We examine the mind-heart, acknowledgement, and the art theory in 󰡔JJeonseubrok(the tradition records)󰡕along with the words emphasized by the masters of the traditional dance, and express them with a language that can be publicized. According to Wang Yangmyung's theory of psychology, we can say that what good mind stands for in "Good dance comes from good mind" is the state where the rightness is embodied in mind and that 'good dance' means the state where 'non-embodiment' of movement and 'non-embodiment' of emotion is realized. In particular, we must always pursue 'sincerity' in the domain of mind-heart, which we know alone. Through these languages, the internal and external value and meaning of Korean traditional dance can be revealed. There is a saying that "effective practice precedes theories of it." Effective practice of traditional dance has existed for a long time. However, the theory of its practice is not sufficient. This article attempts to theoretically explain the effective practice that has always been with us since a long time ago. This article has its significance in that it tries for the first time to theoretically explain the thesis of traditional dance, "Good dance comes from good mind" by using the mind-heart and the acknowledgement of dancer which was emphasized by traditional dancing masters. In particular, it is meaningful that it approached the theory of mind and acknowledgement theory of traditional dance based on the study of Wang Yangmyung.

Korean Dance's Aesthetic Contemplative Norm and Idealistic Boundary of Aesthetics ×

Purpose of this study is to determine idealistic boundary of aesthetics ultimately pursued by investigation of aesthetic contemplative norm defined by traditional philosophical thought inherent in the Korean Dance. The aesthetic consciousness and mental boundary formed from aesthetic contemplative norm of the Korean Dance has created the beauty of harmony, personality, and nature. This includes the 'life characteristics' precious as a human being, 'individuality' to respect an individual, and 'wholeness' that seeks harmony of an individual and the whole. The idealistic boundary of aesthetics inside the beauty with such characteristics can be summarized as follows; First, 'Spirit-energy (Ijeonghapiljeok) boundary of aesthetics' means harmonious relationships between reason and emotion. Namely, it aims harmony and unification between rational boundary and emotional boundary with artistic spirit to follow profound harmony of nature and to pursue new things. Second, 'Life-oriented boundary of aesthetics' includes lively appearance of substantive nature in a mind. It reveals that the appearance of nature itself is the origin of beauty and that 'life characteristics' that being alive itself is beautiful are true beauty. Third, 'Transcendent boundary of aesthetics' contains spirit of the heaven. United aesthetics boundary is to realize the order of nature and to pursue harmony of the boundary between nature Taoism and dance spirit. Surreal time and space world in freewheeling state without any confinement in dance is the best idealistic aesthetics boundary crossing over boundary between human and the god, boundary between reality and unreality, and boundary between labor and play through freedom of deviation. As discussed above, 'Korean Dance's aesthetic contemplative norm and aesthetics boundary' contributes a clue to aesthetically determine the original form of Korean Dance theory and the development. Aesthetic consciousness and aesthetic dignity of a work, and 'idealistic aesthetics boundary' will identify aesthetic categories to determine aesthetic characteristics inherent in the Korean Dance.

Characteristics of Silla's Dancing Based on Life, Its Historical Utilization ×

This paper aims to find how to utilize the dance of Silla era by figuring out what are the characteristics of dance are based on Silla people’s life and how it had been used historically. The characteristics of dance based on Silla people’s life are classified as those of amateur and of expert. Amateurs danced in various fields of life. There was dancing entertainment during community labor which was led by women. A woman monk comported life’s worries which were not able to be avoided even by Buddhist priest by making humorous dances. Wonhyo announced the name of Buddha by Muaemu. Silla nobles maximized their pleasure in parties by dancing entertainment and made drinking parties fun by dancing penalty. A king of Silla danced and sang a song when life’s worries resolved. Hwarang displayed patriotism by a sword dance. There were three characteristics in expert’s dance. First, Silla set a high value on moderation and self-control by aiming for dance joyful but not dissipated and sad but not grievous. Second, people considered pleasure and enjoyment as a root of dance creation. Third, dance took a key role in performing arts of Silla. Silla dance was used in history of Goryeo and Joseon dynasty. Muaemu and Cheoyoungmu were consistently utilized in dance by amateurs and experts. Cheoyoungmu which was utilized by expert’s dance in Chosun dynasty was performed in events of royal family, ceremony, events in local government offices, and private rituals. Hwangchangnangmu was consistently utilized in Gyeongsang Provinces as considered as Silla dance. Currently Silla dance can be utilized in Gyeongju in varying purposes. It is expected to continue Silla people’s life dance in various ways even in the present times.

DUTBEKI is a dance which has been most widely performed by public folks in many parts of KYUNGSANGDO. ULSAN is within the cultural sphere of KYUNGSANGDO. This study intends to analyze the motion forms of a DUTBEKI which have been performed in ULSAN district through an aesthetic approach. This DUTBEKI has been transcended from the past according to the customs of public folks. It was diversely grafted into village shrine rituals and seasonal customs derived from agriculture. As to the form of dancing, it could only be seen as a formless primitive gesture, in the process of dancing in the excess of their mirths. But it has an implicit sense of ritual. It also has politeness and stylishness. So, whenever this dancing was performed in a feast, the loud noise died away and village folks held their breath saying only 'good!' as a cheering word. Needless to say, everybody danced his own dance boasting of his own stylishness in a round circle called 'NANJANG'. The researcher has taken part in these village feasts of ULSAN district and enjoyed this dancing together with village folks from 1981 to 2018. As to the method of analysis, on the basis of this field experience and different documents, the researcher identified and sheded the light on the unique traits of flow and repetitive common motions in this dance from aesthetical standpoints. This approach will help to establish ULSAN DUTBEKI as a cultural asset of ULSAN district and give a basis for preservation and transmission of it.

Hallyangmu is one of folk dances which shows social phenomena and discourses in the tradition process well. In the early days of development, it was a type of folk play that satirizes the society in each region, but as the age changed, it developed into a theater dance. Today, it is performed on stage as a masterpiece of male dancing by adding masculine fashion, excitement and acting. The important point in this systematic flow is that it has been refined as it enters the performing arts and has been handed down with its content and structure. This study focuses on the structuring of works that appear in it's stage-making process. Especially, The style of Kang Sun-young of Han Seong-jun's Hallyangmu which performed for the first time as a theater dance, conducts research focusing on the systematic aspects and performance aesthetics of Hallyangmu. It distinguished from Madang Noli and Gisaeng dance. The characters are four and the narrative structure is simplified, so there is not much movement, but the story progresses in a calm and calm manner while concentrating on the drama. The contents also show indirectly the space elements of the stage form by the character of the comic, humorous, satirical, and the phonetic movements focusing on the relationship among the characters.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the origin, types, and characteristics of dancing in the colleges rally scene before and after the democratization uprising in 1987. As its methodology, this research investigates previous researches, related data, and conducted interviews with related as well as reflecting on my own experience. As a result, the creative Talchoom movement that took place in the 1980s has developed into the dance and pungmool that was at the center of the artistic means to grasp the ideological and simultaneous will of the young students. In the rallies and demonstrations of the 80s and 90s, there were arts propaganda group in each university'. These dances with easy and simple movements were enjoyed by many and was used as a medium to express the will and spirit of youth. The dance was expressed collectively as the structure of cohesion and eruption type, and the four-beat dance made it easy for everyone to share with one another, and flag dance was often used as an inflammatory device. The dances of the university in the 80s and 90s was based on amateurism and functioned as a social activist dance that expressed the will to resist.

A Study of Creative Application of the Dancer's Oral History : Making Diagrams Related to the Korean Dance Scene in the 20th Century ×

Dance is an intangible art that disappears without a trace at the moment of performance, and it is necessary to record it for preservation, re-appreciation, and recreation of dance. From the past, the record of dance has been preserved in a fixed medium such as pictures, photographs, dance notations, etc., which capture impressive scenes of dancing and record images and texts, and a moving image that records the whole process of dancing. However, the recording by these media was indifferent to the thoughts and voices of the people involved in the dance creation. Naturally, in the writings of Korean dance history using these materials, the voice of dancers and the people who are related to dance creation are avoided. The dance oral history emerged as a methodology of dance research is based on the dancer's memories of the body, dancing, and life, and can be used as reliable date for dancers and researchers in that dancers speak for themselves and participate in writing dance history. In order to increase utilization of the dance oral history, this paper seeks creative way for application of 48 dance people's oral history transcripts produced by the Korea Arts Council in 2008 and 2009. Accordingly, three types of diagram related to the Korean dance scene in the 20th century, such as a chart for the 20th century dance educational institutions, a map of dance studios in Chungmu-ro, Seoul in the 1950s, and genealogy charts by dance genres were created.

Dutbeki is a local dance which has been transmitted by customs in Kyongsang area since ancient times. This is a formless dance that each of the villagers enjoyed with their own colors at seasonal farming events in the past. Today, however, Dutbeki is disappearing with a rapidly changing social environment. In this situation, the researcher is going to study the origin and present condition of Dutbeki, local dance of Ulsan area, to protect and transmit it to the future. The method is as follows. Regarding the origin of Ulsan Dutbeki, the researcher reviewed the records of life from the past in Ulsan area. As for the current status of transmission, the current status of the natural handover of Dutbeki in Ulsan area and the current status of it with the participation of the researcher, a native of Ulsan, are discussed. The folklorist Jung Sangbark has established Dutbeki, which had been called as a generic name, as a local intangible culture by attaching a local name to it. As a result, Dutbeki in Ulsan area was designated as Ulsan Dutbeki and the value as an intangible cultural heritage was obtained. In this context, this study has made an accomplishment of confirming the identity of the intangible cultural heritage in Ulsan by establishing the origin of Ulsan Dutbeki and examining the current status of its inheritance.

A Reconsideration on Kim Suk-ja's Chronology of Dancing Activities ×

This study aims to reorganize the chronology of the deceased Kim Suk-ja's life as a dancer, the holder of the National Intangible Cultural Asset No. 97, Salpuri dance. In particular, the chronologies of Kim's dancing activities presented in the pamphlets of her memorial concert which has been held for 10 years after her death show inconsistency and errors. Therefore, this study attempts to correct them. She had carved a place for herself as a traditional dancer while doing activities as a Shamanic dancer in Seoul since 1976. As a result, part of her chronology that displayed the schedules of her activities since then was made public by newspapers and therefore is reliable. On the other hand, information on dancing-related activities from the Japanese colonial era to the 1960s by Kim Suk-ja, who was born in 1927, is unclear. Her chronology during this period does not sufficiently reflect her dancing activities or provides incorrect information. Therefore, this study corrects and reorganizes her aspects of learning dances during her early years and information on her activities in Daejeon from historical contexts.
