Abstract
Overcoming Limitations of Writing on the 20th Century’s Korean Dance History through Analysis and Interpretation of Oral History Scripts on Dance ×

Compare to the other arts forms, dance as an intangible performing arts foam is restricted in records. Until the photo and video materials were actively utilized for recording dance, the dance was only remained in memories of dancers and audience members who experienced the dance site of those times. Recently dance oral history is beginning to apply for writing new dance history. While dance oral history offers to dancers to testify their own histories, it makes dance people to participate in writing dance history. Thus, oral history scripts on dance that is dance peoples’ oral texts can expend horizon of dance history’s writing. In present, historical resources on the 20th century’s Korean dance, particularly in the period of Korean Liberation (1945~1948) and the period of Korea War (1950~1953) are poor as if these periods are vacuity. Even if some documents related to these periods are existed, those contents are the event, the dancer, the dance work, the dance criticism, and dance organization which are limited evidence of these periods. On the other hands, oral history scripts on dance related to these periods provide vivid historical evidences on cultural environments and real situations of dance production and dancers. Because those oral texts were created by voices of senior dancers who lived in these periods. Futhermore, the scripts clue in on anthological, sociological, and psychological resources related to the dancer or dance trends in these two periods. Therefore, applications of oral history scripts on dance enable to write on deeper historical themes, such as the dancer’s identity, changes of aesthetics, trends of dance creation, dance policies, and dance agencies in the 20th century. The purpose of this study is how to overcoming limitations of writing on the 20th century’s Korean dance history through the oral history scripts on dance. First of all, the researcher analyzed two dance history books, Hangguk Hyeondae Yesulsa Daegye I [An Outline of Arts History of the Korean Modern Period] and Woori Muyong Baeknyeon [100 Years of Korean Dance]. Then, the vacancy and the errs related to the period of Korean Liberation and the period of Korea War that discovered in those two books were made up with the texts of oral history on dance that completed in 2008 and 2009 by the Arts Resource Center of the Arts Council Korea. In result, this study has attempt to open new horizon for writing on history of the 20th century’s Korean dance. Even though this study first attempts to apply the oral history text of senior dancers for writing dance history, the trail is limited to supplying new historical facts. That is, the study could not developed to writing new dance history because previous resources were so poverty than the researcher had expected. In the future the oral history scripts would aid not only dance history researchers to write alternative dance history, but also to discover counter memories compare to the previous dance history books.

Abstract
A study Curriculum Development Direction through Content Analysis of the Korean Traditional Dance Historical Research ×

There are 111 main conveniences that Korean dance has in common with history research areas. Both could be categorized as age, ryupa, kind, local, and life of five. This study analyzed Korean dance history in order to provide direction for the development of localized educational content. For this purpose, we redefined the needs and professional structure of the writers of Korean dance history around the cheotjae, or the contemporary Officer. The other purposes of this study were to ensure the clarity of the Korean dance category and to express the needs of the Korean council of dance-related institutions and organizations. Prior to the development of the orientation of the educational content, the universality, consistency, and originality of Korean dance would need to be combined. Abstract
Big Data Analysis for Dance Studies Using Text Mining ×

The purpose of this study is to develop interdisciplinary research between dance studies and big data analysis. To this end, the text mining technique, which extracts meaningful information from text, was adopted as the research methodology. In the process of text mining, original PDF texts on the themes of Chum/Muyong(dance), morphological analysis, user dictionary construction, and social network analysis were collected to extract significant named entities and clarify the relations between them. The outcomes of the process, which comprised the extracted text data (total 10,231 copies), a named entity classification table, and a network of named entities, were loaded into the big data analysis system under development. The findings of the study are as follows: First, there were 25 total morpheme types, with 24,691 words with a frequency of more than 100. From these, a second morphemic analysis of sentences containing words such as “Chum” (춤), “Mu” (무), and “dance” (댄스) was conducted. It was revealed that in parts of speech with a frequency of 10 or more, there were 3,057 nouns, 602 proper nouns, 352 verbs, 205 numbers, 135 adjectives, and 35 adverbs. Second, a user dictionary was developed in the form of a taxonomy with stratification between hyperonym and hyponyms. The dictionary contained 2,404 words, which were classified by theme, person, dance piece, genre, theory, function, element, and period. Third, social network analysis revealed that the terms “Muyong,” “Chum,” and “arts and culture” were closely interconnected at the heart of the network. In contrast, dance deviated somewhat from the center. “Dance” was the only word to be connected with the network of dance sports and jazz. This study is significant because it represents the first attempt to apply text mining to written records on dance. In addition, it could suggest ways to expand the use of big data analysis to dance studies. Based on the study, a big data analysis system that is specialized in dance was developed, and the contents will be updated continuously.

Abstract
New Understanding of Documenting Dance Studies : Exploring the Features and Methods of Dance Ekphrasis ×

In this study, we investigated the characteristics and methods of dance ekphrastic. We take a look at the concept of ekphrasis and then looked into the notion of ekphrasis in dance. Ekphrastic dance takes into consideration the historical, political and cultural context of the piece whilst interpreting its content. Ekphrasis accompanies dance studies, making intermediality an inherent part of the discipline. There have been few studies on ekphrastic dance, or the art of transforming dance works into text. This study uses methodology from literature studies by exploring books, music, digital ekphrasis. Such a study can give something as fleeting as a dance movement theoretical and historical weight. By transforming dance into words, we hope this study will provide new perspectives and extend the concept of dance research.

Abstract
Korean Dance and Non-textual Mass Media : Focusing on Contemporary Sound Recordings and Films, 1930-1960 ×

This study focuses on the sociocultural and artistical interrelations between the "Korean Dance" and two of the most popular non-textual forms of mass media - commercial sound recordings (gramophone records) and films (feature films, newsreels, documentaries) - between the 1930s and 1960s. First, this study focuses on how gramophone records were employed through the Korean dance recitals during this period, as well as on what type of music was used in these recitals. Second, this paper examines the films documenting "Korean Dance" shot and produced during the time period in question, and discusses how these films were produced and how it has impacted establishing the "Korean Dance" through its mass distribution. By doing so, this paper attempts to provide a preliminary suggestion on how the "Korean Dance" has made its transitions over time, as well as an opportunity to historically understand the actual manifestation of "Korean dance" during its earlier days of a modern form of performing arts. It can be strongly argued that a strong sense of a historical parallel is revealed between the historic development of the Korean Dance in the early 20th century Korea and the development of the notion of Korean national culture, as both came into their modern manifestation through a series of constant interactions between Korean premodern cultures and the modern foreign cultures.
